SHEET PILE ANCHORING | CONSTRUCTION PIT FORTUNA POLDER

Because the demand for drinking water will increase and to optimize the pre-purification of the Gijster, a new intake pumping station will be built on the bank of the Bergsche Maas in the Fortuna Polder. To transport drinking water from the pumping station to the reservoir, three transmission lines will be constructed. Temporary construction pits are required to lay the transport pipes. To ensure that the sheet pile walls do not collapse under pressure, a strut frame or an anchoring system can be used. The advantage of using anchors is that the cofferdam remains accessible for various equipment. For the Fortunapolder project, JLD provided the design, delivery, installation and testing of 100 anchors and accessories.

The stretch between Amsterdam and Wijk bij Duurstede involves 120km of sheet piling. Of the 120 km of sheet piling, 25 km is at the end of its technical lifespan. The current sheet pile walls along the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal are 30 to 70 years old. Several measures have been designed to renovate the sheet pile walls. Depending on the status of the sheet pile walls, the best solution is applied. The solutions JLD Contracting has contributed to involve anchoring the completely new structures or anchoring the existing structures and thus extending their life span. The work was carried out largely from a pontoon. Of the 70 sections present, approximately 20 were anchored with JLD Klapankers with lengths of up to 23 meters.

It concerns a work in Haarlem where partial replacement and reinforcement was the goal. A new section of steel sheet piling was installed and 350 meters of concrete quay had to be anchored to stabilize the construction. After Schouls Brothers from Leiden accepted the work after the tender, JLD Contracting has been continuously involved in optimizing the anchoring construction and the plans for the execution. The anchors were recalculated, special anchor chairs were developed and a special test yoke had to be built to test the anchors.
Since there were many obstacles in the water (floating jetties, an old Navy ship, several houseboats), the anchors were mostly placed from the shore.
Because of buildings close to the quay, anchors also had to be placed from the water. In consultation with the residents, the houseboats were temporarily relocated and the anchoring work was carried out. Both the residents, client and main contractor are more than satisfied with the work performed by JLD Contracting.
